Retail floor roles: reading German job adverts without guessing

Words like Verkauf, Beratung, and Kassentätigkeit signal different mixes of selling, advising, and till work — and employers expect you to know the difference.

German retail adverts pack a lot into short paragraphs. Verkaufskraft usually points to active selling; Beratung emphasises product advice; Kassentätigkeit highlights till and payment handling.

When you apply, mirror the advert’s verbs in your CV bullets. If they ask for Wochenendarbeit, say plainly which weekends you can cover instead of leaving it vague.

Many shops still value local availability as highly as sector experience. Mentioning your commute or nearby towns reduces friction for managers who need reliable weekend cover.

If you come from hospitality, transfer examples carefully: upselling a set menu is not identical to advising on sizes, but both show you can guide a customer toward a decision.

A short application review can catch mismatches — for example, leading with kitchen experience when the shop wants floor-first customer contact.
